Biography of Mike Anthony
Mike Anthony
Chairman of the Trustee Board
Severn Trent Pension Scheme

At the end of 2001 Mike took his planned early retirement from Julius Baer Investments (the London subsidiary of one of Switzerland`s leading asset managers specialising in fixed income), where he was Director of International business development and client service. Amongst his clients were an agency of the United Nations, central banks and a number of large international pension funds. His experience spans both the benefit and investment sides of pensions. On the benefit side he spent 20 years with what is now Mercer. During this time he encountered most, if not all, pension fund situations, becoming Principal Consultant in London. On the investment side he was the first consultant to switch to the investment side of pensions, joining Montagu Investment Management. After a very successful spell he joined Henderson Pension Fund Management as deputy MD. He then moved on to US consultants SEI, as UK Managing Director, developing further his asset class and investment consulting skills. Thereafter he joined the board of what was to become HSBC Asset Management. As a result this experience he has a thorough understanding of asset allocation, equity and bond investment and manager selection and reporting. Mike is a Fellow of the Pensions Management Institute (past President 1989/91), Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute, Member of the Chartered Securities Institute and Fellow of the Pensions Advisory Service. He has supported the NAPF, lecturing on their training courses and he co-founded the South East Group, of which he is a past chairman. Mike has just completed 12 years as a Board Member of The Pensions Advisory Service (formerly OPAS) and one of its long standing advisers. He is a past chairman of its Professional Standards Committee. He has written for the pensions press (and to it!) and has spoken at pension conferences both in the UK and internationally. In 1987 he was asked by the CBI to sit on their committee looking at short termism in pension investment. For 10 years he was a visiting lecturer at the City University Business School (Executive Development) on institutional investment. Mike became a trustee of the Julius Baer`s UK Group Pension Scheme in 1995 and this combined with his extensive pensions experience led to Capital Cranfield Trustees asking him to join them as an independent , professional trustee. He was appointed to its Board in 2003 and took over the chairmanship of the Company at the start of 2007. As an independent he currently chairs 7 trustee bodies and two associated investment committees. His two largest schemes each have respectively assets in excess of £1.5billion. At the start of 2004 he was appointed to the Advisory Investment Committee of the World Health Organisation in Geneva, this resulted from his undertaking two investment projects for them in 2001 and 2002. Mike has chaired NAPF investment fundamentals courses and ran a trustee workshop at the NAPF Investment Conference in 2005. In 2006 he spoke on “How to avoid Scheme failure” at the PMI/UKSIP conference in and in February 2007 he spoke at the NAPF Trustee conference on “Investment strategies for closed schemes”. He has recently been interviewed on PMITV and the Parliamentary Diary blog.
